Sesame oil for oil swishing or oil pulling
Well, a few weeks ago I saw a show on Dr. Oz where he was talking about oil pulling and other mystical treatments. I had never heard of oil pulling or oil swishing before. On the show he swished for about three seconds just to give a demonstration. Later I looked it up on line and decided to try it. I went to my local grocery store and got a bottle of sesame oil. There is a proper way to do it. Carefully timed for the best results. It is an old Ayurveda process that works to heal the body and rid it of impurities. So far I am on day 3 and you must follow the following directions to get the proper benefit. I tend to keep it up. I feel different, more clear headed. Really. I felt a change on day 2. It is working for me. So, here is the proper way to perform oil pulling.
Oil Pulling Explained
1. First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids (including water), pour exactly one tablespoon of sunflower or sesame oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth. I don’t receommend doing this process at any other time. It will not work if not done at the very start of the day.
2. Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don’t tilt your head back to gargle though). You’ll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing. If your jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you’re putting too much into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you’ll feel very comfortable. Pretty soon.
There is no right way or wrong way to swish and pull oil. Don’t focus on doing it right. Do it with very natural movement. Do this gently, not vigorously, in a relaxed way for about 20 minutes.
If you have the unbearable urge to swallow and If it becomes too unpleasant, spit out and try again. It can be a bit unpleasant at first when you’re not used to it, but soon won’t be bothersome at all, just like brushing your teeth.
When the oil has become saturated with the toxins it has pulled out, it may become whitish and a thinner, milky consistency, depending on the type of oil used. Each time you oil pull, it can take a different amount of time to get to that point, so 20 minutes is a general rule of thumb, but you can experiment with this.
If you spit out before 20 minutes. start again, the process is to make the oil swish enough time in your mouth so that it becomes a white thik substance which is a indication of process completion.
3. When the 20 minutes are over, spit the oil out. Rinse your mouth out with salt water and brush your teeth. Floss as well. The salt water rinses away any microbes that are left and will help with any sort of inflammation.
Why do this? What are the benefits?
Well, there are many. Right away your teeth will become whiter. People who have tried this say that the following ailments have responded to oil pulling. That is not a complete list. If you do your own research, you will find many other ailments that people say were remedied or even completely healed by oil pulling.
Acne

Arthritis
Asthma
Back and Neck Pain
Bad Breath
Bronchitis
Chronic Fatigue

Oil pulling seems to be working for me. I will give updates later as I continue as to things that I think have been made better by my oil pulling. I mean people not in the western world have been doing this for hundreds of years. There has to be something to it.
I was watching Dr. Oz about a week ago and he was talking about detoxing the body with mung bean soup. That whole sure was amazing. More to come about that, but here is the recipe for mung bean soup.
Ingredients 1 cup whole green mung beans -soaked overnight 2 cup water + 1/2-1 to taste tsp. salt-to cook beans in pressure cooker 2 cup water -to achieve the soup 1 tbsp sunflower oil or ghee 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 1/4 tsp hing (known as asafoetida in the West) 1 bay leaf 1/2 tsp Turmeric 1 tsp mixed cumin and coriander powder 11/2 tsp ginger -chopped 1/2 tsp garlic -chopped 1 tsp or to taste Salt 11/2 tsp. lemon juice 1 tsp raw sugar cane (optional)
Preparation Time: 45 minutes Directions Soak the mung beans overnight in water. Clean and finely grind ginger and garlic. Drain the mung beans, wash them two times and cook in a pressure cooker with the indicated amount of water until tender. It takes around 25 minutes, according to your pressure cooker. (The beans have to be broken.) If you use a regular pot, it will take 40-45 minutes for the beans to be fully cooked. Heat the oil or ghee in a large deep saucepan and add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds pop, add hing, bay leaf, turmeric, cumin, coriander, ginger and a pinch of black pepper. Mix well and do not allow to burn. Place the cooked beans with the fresh water and the remaining ingredients into the saucepan. Bring to a boil then simmer for a few minutes more. Add Lemon and Enjoy!
American women have been taught that a little extra around the hips, butt and thighs is a bad thing, when actually, this is something that we should embrace. It’s a documented fact that women with hourglass and pear-shaped bodies have higher IQs than women with rectangle or apple shaped bodies,…
When last I got on the scale, I was one size. I just assumed I was the same. This was months ago. I got on the actual scale today and I was 10 pounds more. Bad. I plan to turn that around.

I just realized something today. I like to start my day off with coffee…most of them anyway BUT. But that means that I am out and not eating at home for breakfast, mainly because I am taking my child to school or work. Normally I end up at Barnes and Noble. Okay except that I add a scone to the coffee or a biscotti or the chocolate covered graham crackers to go with. That is not so good because the day is already starting off with added sugar.
That needs to stop and I think today was the last day. I had the chocolate covered graham crackers with coffee. I wish there were healthier choices here. I will have to get up early and eat at home. With that solution, the added sugar is out and I will just have the coffee. Even that I am trying to wean away from. I think my caffeine intake is too high as well.
Breakfast of champions. i used my juicer..which i think I need to use more than several times a month. I love this juice. Carrots, an apple and a large beet. This makes a nutritious juice that is good for you, energizes you and even flushes the liver.
Silent inflammation is a killer. I was watching Dr. Oz last week and he was talking amount many things and he mentioned inflammation and how it is the start of all disease….how it is not good to have it in our bodies. He always scares me when I watch his show. It is just TOO informative and makes me so AWARE of what I might be doing wrong and what I need to change. In particular he was talking about gargling…how if we do not gargle, mucus and inflammation literally builds up in the back of our throats and esophagus-es and blocks oxygen. Gargling reduces it. I have always been an intermittent gargler. My bottle of Listerine lasts me a long time. Since last week, I have been using it each day!
After doing some more reading on the net, I learned about silent inflammation. How aches and pains, back pain, coughs and headaches are due to that. Well, I have had this awful cough since Christmas. Now I have the feeling of inflammation. I know that it borders on paranoia but I feel filled up and overrun by it. And I feel the pressing desire to be rid of it. Silent inflammation is manifested by the coughs, aches and pains. Food is the answer. Food is the solution.
Good fats are one thing that can reduce inflammation. I grew up taking cod liver oil everyday. My mother was a firm believer in wheat germ, worm medicine and cod liver oil. I actually liked it. I have some in the refrigerator right now that I will be taking when I get home. I have yet to convince my child it is a good thing. Ginger is also something that will reduce inflammation…the fresh kind. Eating the right kind of sugars can also reduce inflammation. Starches are wrong and the fruit sugars are the better choice. So, more fresh fruits like: apples, apsaragus, beans, broccoli, blackberries, blueberries, cabbage, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, green beans, honeydew melon, kiwi, leafy greens, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries, spinach and strawberries.
The best thing we can do is get rid of the free radicals that are everywhere. Antioxidants are what we all need. These are the things that will keep cancers away. The key foods we need here are berries, kale and other leafy green vegetables, grains like quinoa , seaweeds or sea vegetables and cacoa or chocolate. The darker the better. I feel like I am ready to make a change. Really. Less meat and more fruits and vegetables. I am already a seaweed fan so that will not be an issue. Seaweed and its benefits are something I have been able to teach my child. She will eat that with no problem.
I am planning a radical change within this next two weeks. I am so anxious to have this horrible lingering, inflammation filled cough go away. We all need to begin to see food as medicine, pay attention to our bodies in regards to inflammation and eat lots of antioxidant filled foods. Here is to a lifestyle change. And…a big thanks to Dr. Oz for making me so aware of what I need to do!
